What is Seasonal Flu?

Flu is a common infection of the upper respiratory tract caused by the flu virus. It usually occurs during the winter months. For most people, it is an unpleasant but not a life-threatening illness.

Influenza (flu) is a highly infectious acute respiratory illness caused by the influenza virus. It is an acute illness of the upper and lower respiratory tracts. Influenza affects people of all ages with outbreaks occurring almost every winter season. The flu is usually a self-limiting illness with most people recovering in 2-7 days.

However, flu has the potential to be severe and can cause serious illness and death, particularly in the very young and in the elderly. It is recommended that all patients in at-risk groups receive the vaccin

About the Flu Vaccine

The Flu Vaccine is now available in all our Johnston’s Pharmacy stores. We have a team of very experienced Pharmacists who provide a convenient and comfortable service.

There are a number of different variations of the flu virus in circulation each year and the type of flu virus in circulation can change each year. This is why a new flu vaccine needs to be given every year. The flu vaccine helps your immune system to produce antibodies to fight the flu virus. When someone who has been vaccinated comes into contact with the virus, these antibodies attack the virus preventing infection.

Who should get the Vaccine?

The best time to get the flu vaccine is before the flu season starts.

It is available from October to the end of April each year.

Getting the flu vaccine is the best way to protect yourself against flu. The vaccine starts to work after about 2 weeks. The flu vaccine helps your immune system produce antibodies to fight infection. Having the vaccine can stop you from getting sick if you come in contact with the flu virus.

Anyone over the age of 2 years is eligible to get the vaccine at Johnston's Pharmacy.

For those who are in the following at risk groups the vaccine is free:

  • At-risk patients
  • • All patients aged 65 years and over
